1858-1940 A History of the tobacco trade in China The Tobacco Project
China is building a tobacco museum to be located in the city of Yuxi in Kunming province (SW area). It is designed to cover both the history of the tobacco industry in China and the dangers of smoking.
A Chronology
• 1612: CHINA: Imperial edict forbidding the planting and use tobacco.(TSW)
• 1638: CHINA: Use or distribution of tobacco is made a crime punishable by decapitation.
• 1842: Opium War. Treaty of Nanjing forces China to accept opium from British traders
1858 Treaty of Tianjin allows cigarettes to be imported into China duty free
1862 James Augustus Thomas is born
1865 James B. Duke is born
1880 Charlie Soong arrives in the US sponsored by tobacco magnate, Julian S. Carr. He was educated at Trinity College shortly thereafter.
1888 James Thomas makes his first visit to China
1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki allows foreign business to trade in China
1899 JA Thomas begins working for W. Duke & Sons
1900 China Relief Expedition is mounted to rescue foreign residents in China from the Boxer Rebellion
1900-1903 JA Thomas works
